The popularity of surfing starting growing in the1960's when movies like Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo, which exposed the rest of the world to a sport only known to locals who were lucky enough to live near the beach. Surfing is the kind of sport where the person sits out past the break and is waiting for a wave to come so they can paddle and try to catch it before it breaks so that they can ride it and get a good ride.
That would be horrible to have to carry a piece of wood down the beach until you got to your spot and then you jump in the water and the water just water logs the wood surfboard that is the main reason why I can see why people changed the surfboard. You always hear them say things like that wave was amazing or that was incredible. Don't be discouraged and keep at it.
They can help you meet and make connections with others who are new to the sport of surfing, surfing with a buddy who is great for your development as a surfer, you will be able to motivate one another help each other improve your surfing performance. Longboards were originally the only type of surfboard available, and an entire generation learned to do some pretty radical things while handling these gigantic boards. The second type of a wipeout and without a doubt the most horrific is going over the falls, this is from not having enough paddling speed to catch the wave early enough, getting sucked up the face and pitched over with the lip.
It is where everyone starts, even Kelly Slater or Andy Irons. The type of board you will want to find should fit your skill level, your height, and the type of boarding experience you want to have.
