A crowded beach with large, aggressive waves and experienced surfers is not where you will want to attempt surfing for the first time, it will be a very daunting experience and probably discourage you. Like most sports, the best way to learn to surf is to do it.
If they were not easy to carry and use then nobody would be surfing today because there are many people who have to walk for awhile before they can surf and nobody wants to carry a hundred pound wood surfboard. The arms of the suit generally are thinner than the rest, allowing the freedom to paddle the board. This is the place were surfing legends are made and broken.
Usually, surfing schools will provide the surfboard for your lesson, so you won't need to buy a surfboard right away. If you can get onto a good school your surfing will come on in leaps and bounds. This allows greater stability.
It is the only place where surfers can find waves from 25-50 feet in the winter outside of Hawaii. Always surf with someone else.
